Welcome to the Advanced Dental Associates blog!
Are you apprehensive about making your next dental appointment in the San Antonio area? Then you have come to the right place, because we are prepared to put your fears to rest.
Dental anxiety is a serious condition and your health is on the line. So, you can trust that we will find the easiest way for you to get the care you deserve.
Some patients inform us that they stay away because they have had very bad experiences with dentists in the past, while others simply don’t like the idea of getting shots or the ominous sound of drills.
Here’s the problem: by not going to the dentist every 6 months or so, you won’t be receiving the deep cleanings that keep plaque and tartar from creating unhealthy situations.
And without exams, you will never be made aware of any decay or gum disease that can be easily filled or fixed early on. Plus, you won’t be getting looked over for oral cancer and other potentially deadly problems. As such, your fear of the dentist is creating a situation that may give you less anxiety in the short run but is not a sustainable model for healthy living.
Dealing With Dental Anxiety In San Antonio, TX
We will make you feel comfortable the moment you arrive for your dental work. And we will also set you up with sedation dentistry, if need be. Sedation dentistry just means that we will use sedatives to relax you for your dental procedure.
You can count on this service whenever you need to undergo an invasive procedure or must confront your dentistry-related fear. There are three types of sedation offering different levels of relaxation:
Nitrous Oxide Sedation: This type of sedation is the most frequently used of the three. It involves the use of nitrous oxide or ‘laughing gas’ to normalize your bodily functions and relax you for the dental treatment.
Oral Sedation: If your treatment is non-invasive and you only have mild dental fear, we will give you a pill that you have to take prior to your appointment. Keep in mind, however, oral sedatives are powerful and you will need a ride home afterwards!
Intravenous Sedation: If your treatment is more invasive or you have severe dental fear, you can count on this IV sedation to make things easier for you. This form of sedation is administered by injecting the sedative into your bloodstream. The result is immediate and you will relax almost instantly. Requiring special training and certification, dental IV sedation is the highest level of sedation we offer. The IV sedation we use is identical to that found in hospitals that put people into a “twilight state” for some procedures. While you’ll still be awake during your appointment, you won’t remember much, including why you were ever afraid in the first place.
