What is trench mouth?Trench mouth is a form of gum disease that causes so much pain to the mouth. It causes bleeding, ulcers, swelling, pain and there are ulcers in between the teeth and causes death to the tissues of the gum. The term trench mouth affected most of the soldiers who were fighting during the world war. This is because of poor oral hygiene, poor diet, stress, and the gums getting weak and there is gum disease.

How common is trench mouth


Trench mouth affects anyone who has poor dental hygiene and if you rarely go for dental checkups. If you have a poor immune system and have diseases like HIV and diabetes you are likely to be affected by trench mouth. If your diet is poor, you are also likely to get trench mouth. Ensure that you eat well and brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day.

Symptoms of trench mouth


If you have a trench mouth you can experience bleeding of the gums and pain while you brush your teeth. You will have a metallic taste from the mouth as the gums continue swelling. This gum disease can make you experience flu-like symptoms where you will have fatigue and fever. Regular dental checkups will help the dentist will detect any form of gingivitis or gum disease.

Diagnosing of trench mouth


The dentist examines your gum and teeth. The dentist might poke the gums to see if they are in pain or bleed. The dentist does an x-ray and sees if the infection is spread deep into the bones.
