Some people do not know they have a condition known as a fissured tongue. However, there are tell-tale clues that make it obvious that you have this oral health complaint. To understand more about this condition, you first need to define it.
What Is a Fissured Tongue?
A fissured tongue represents a tongue that features multiple grooves or furrows on the dorsal (top) side of the tongue. The fissures may be either deep or shallow, or multiple or single. Usually, the fissures are seen prominently on the center of the tongue. About 5% of people in the U.S. have this condition. The aging process seems to increase the severity or development of a fissured tongue. Men usually have the condition more often than women.
How Is the Diagnosis Made for a Fissured Tongue?
Usually, a fissured tongue is diagnosed during a routine exam in our office. We can identify a fissured tongue, based on its expected clinical appearance. No biopsy is needed to make the diagnosis or support the finding.
Can a Fissured Tongue Be Treated?
A fissured tongue is considered harmless. As it has no related symptoms, it does not require treatment. You just need to make sure you follow a program of good oral hygiene, especially when removing food from the surface of the tongue or the fissures. Cleansing the tongue and fissures prevent irritation or possible problems with bad breath, which can happen when food gets caught in the tongue's grooves. We can recommend specific devices you can use to ensure that you clean your tongue thoroughly.
Anyone can get a fissured tongue, although it is not contagious. As noted, most people, who develop this type of condition, are older or experience it later in life. Do you have a fissured tongue? Maybe you have another age-related dental condition. If so, give us a call to set up an appointment for an exam and consultation.
