How Your Body Tries to Protect and Clean Your Teeth Naturally

Posted on 6/20/2019 by Advanced Dental Associates
How Your Body Tries to Protect and Clean Your Teeth Naturally If you ask someone how they keep their teeth clean and healthy, they will talk about regular brushing and flossing. They may add rinsing with a mouthwash and regular checkups at our offices. These are all part of a good oral hygiene routine, but the body is also capable of helping keep teeth clean. It does some things naturally that will not only clean your teeth but protect them.

The Importance of Enamel

The teeth in your mouth are made up of different parts. The inner parts of the tooth include the root, nerve ends, pulp and dentin. On the outside of the tooth is the enamel. The enamel is the layer that protects the rest of the tooth. The enamel is a thin layer that helps protect the inner parts of the teeth from bacteria and any other type of damage. It is the hardest substance in the human body and can last a lifetime with proper oral care. Problems arise when the enamel begins to erode. If the enamel erodes, it can lead to issues with cavities and tooth decay. The enamel can erode due to plaque buildup or because of other outside forces that can wear it down such as acidic and sugary foods.

How Salvia Helps

A second natural defense for teeth is the saliva that is in the mouth. The saliva makes it easier to chew and swallow foods. That means the teeth do not have to work as hard and are less likely to suffer damage. Saliva also helps remove any debris in the teeth and gums. It also helps wash away bacteria and prevent the bacteria from growing on the teeth. The body does what it can to protect your teeth, but that does not mean you should not help it. You need to protect your enamel and should avoid things that stop the production of saliva. Give your mouth the support it needs by maintaining a good oral hygiene routine and let it do the rest.
