Dealing With Dental Anxiety
Dealing with dental anxiety can be unpleasant. If you have never experienced it, you may not understand what it’s like. We work with patients every day who have to deal with these emotions. Let’s talk about one of these patients — let’s call her Sarah.
Sarah developed dental anxiety due to a bad dental experience as a child. The office she went to as a kid was scary … and they hurt her. Ever since, she has avoided dental offices due to the fear of pain. Because of this, she developed some serious dental problems. Regular cleanings and checkups are important for good oral health. Sarah allowed small problems turn into big ones when she avoided getting the checkups she needed to stay health.
Because of these problems, Sarah did eventually need dental care. When she did have to visit the dentist, she walked in shaky and nervous. She had an upset stomach and was generally uncomfortable in being there. Dental anxiety is not fun and the knowledge that she probably needed extensive dental care was scary.
Fortunately, our sedation options were able to help Sarah feel more comfortable. Let’s talk about our options and how they can help you, too:
Our Dental Sedation Options
Here at Advanced Dental Associates, we offer three levels of dental sedation. Each can be used in different situations to help you stay comfortable.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation — Our lowest level of sedation. This option is administered via a face mask and is inhaled to create a sense of euphoria. Nitrous oxide is also known as laughing gas and will take the edge off of your nerves! This option is great for patients who have mild dental anxiety.
Oral Conscious Sedation — Are you a bit more anxious than what nitrous can handle? We also offer oral conscious sedation. Oral sedation is administered … you guessed it … orally! It is a medication that in ingested prior to your procedure. It will make you very groggy. Many patients who use this option even sleep through their appointments. You will be completely comfortable and relaxed.
IV Sedation — IV sedation is our highest level of sedation and is used for patients who are very anxious or fearful or who are undergoing long or complicated procedures. It creates a sleep-like state that will allow you to have a completely comfortable and stress-free experience. IV sedation is administered by a trained professional via an intravenous line.
Frequently Asked Sedation Questions
Is it safe? Yes! Our team is specially trained to administer sedation in a safe, effective way. We also monitor you throughout your experience with sedation to make sure you are comfortable and safe.
Can I drive to and from the office? That depends. If you are using nitrous oxide only, then yes. However, if you choose oral sedation or IV sedation, you will need a friend or family member to take you to and from your appointment.
Will I remember anything about the appointment? If you choose IV sedation, no. That’s why we use it for patients who are fearful or very anxious. The other options will allow you to remember what happens during your visit.
Will I actually be comfortable? Yes! We will help you choose the sedation option that best meets your needs so that you are completely comfortable!
